SUCCESSFUL OPEN HOUSE - Barb Klein
This fall we participated in our local home show and two weeks later in the Log Home Expo in St. Charles, MO. We talked with a lot of people who planned on building a log home. But, times are a little different now. People’s financial situations have changed dramatically. A lot of them are on hold for a year or two until this current financial crisis settles down. We have to tighten our belts and hold on. The rewards will come and in great abundance once this financial atmosphere changes. Good years are coming again if we can survive this slowdown.
We had two great open house events, one week after each show. We handed out brightly colored 8x10 flyers telling folks how much fun it is to come to one of our open houses. The big incentive, food! We served grilled hot dogs, hot apple cider and Barb’s famous homemade chocolate chip cookies. We made them just before the open house started, so the aroma of baking cookies filled our home. It’s funny how free food attracts people.
We also arranged a special extra tour for those folks who wanted to see another log home after we closed our model at 4 pm. We have a customer who has a beautifully decorated log home only 15 minutes from us that was built in 2006. The owners are a fun couple who love to show their home to big groups. We just stand back and let them take over. It is fun to sit back and let some one else tell how great Kuhn’s Bros and their representatives are. They had volunteered to do this for us with no compensation. However, we give them $500 and take them to dinner at their favorite Bar BQ restaurant whenever anyone buys a home that has toured their home. They love it and so do we!
The first open house had about 25 people but the second one was even more successful with about 50 people at our model. Nineteen cars followed us to the our customer’s home. We believe this open house was such a success because we told everyone that took a flyer that it would be to their advantage to find out all they could about log homes. And by attending our open house they would have an opportunity to see an older log home, ours is 24 years old, and a newly built, beautifully decorated log home. And, have fun doing it! You can’t pass up Barb’s homemade cookies! Most folks laughed and said they would certainly try to come. Don’t people just love it when you are having fun doing what you do? Enthusiasm, happiness and love of log homes, customers can certainly see that and respond in a positive way.

2008 Sales Representative Awards
Our first Sales Meeting held in Hershey went off without a hitch on October 6, 2008. However, most of us went home 20 lbs heavier from the chocolate. This year’s meeting was a one day, jam packed day, of valuable information for our sales representatives. The attendance from our Sales Representative was good even with the gas prices. Chris did a bang up job on all of our awesome programs that are available to help make that sale a success. Lynda Tompkins and Ken Holmes went through the engineering portion of the Sales Representative Portal and sharpened everyone’s back pocket tool…The Pricing Calculator. Back by popular demand we had our process training held in the afternoon. This was very detailed on qualifying by Jock Davidson. And once we finally got him off the stage, Joe, Tonya and Lynda had a chance to help getting your customer through the system as seamlessly as possible. Check out the presentations online for reference. And feel free to contact any one of the speakers or your RSM if you should have any further questions or would like to expand on the topics. The day ended with our Awards Dinner and a fabulous meal. Vincent Feltman was named Corporate Sales Representative of the Year and Todd & Betty Fisher as Network Sales Representative of the Year. Pictures and detailed information will be posted on the Sales Representative Portal. Check it out.

The Diana M. Reedy Quality of Effort Award
In late July, we lost a dear friend, a loving wife and mother, and valued member of the Kuhns Bros. Log Homes network of sales representatives when Diana Reedy passes away. Diana was loved by all who knew her, certainly by all of us. One of her eulogists at her Celebration of Life ceremony was a customer and neighbor; wouldn’t we all like to think that our customers had that much respect for us? And, Diana loved us back. She did that by giving of herself in many ways. She gave us her time; she listened to our thought and concerns; she mentored and advised us. She is truly missed.
Diana was renowned for putting forth her utmost effort in everything she did, whether it was as a parent, a volunteer for charity, a sales representative, or a friend. And, she admired people who put forth their utmost effort. It is something she instilled in people, especially children and those who were just learning to do something. She mentored us to have this virtue. To Diana, it wasn’t always about winning and being the best, but the quality of the effort that is made. To her, the measure of results that occur is directly proportional to the quality of effort that is made.
For these reasons, and many more, we are proud to announce the establishment of the Diana M. Reedy Quality of Effort Award. This award will be given to any member of the Kuhns Bros. Log Homes sales network, who may not be the best in sales but are exhibiting a high quality of effort that will one day make them successful in terms of sales. It’s an award that recognizes the quality of a person for making the effort to do the right things, to learn to make changes and adapt, to institute innovative or commendable methods, to make improvements to one day be a success.
The first recipient of the Diana M. Reedy Quality of Life Award has been a member of the sales network for six years. He has put forth a tremendous quality of effort by:
- Recognizing that if he wanted more sales he had to work harder for them.
- He started a building crew to offer a one stop shop through to construction with the intentions of stepping back as he generated more sales for the crew to eventually build by themselves. He wanted to be sure he had a crew that was building according to KBLH’s specification and was of excellent quality.
- He makes every effort to win the customer over by first meeting them face to face, earning their trust, and walking the property they intend to build on.
- If he knows he is working with a serious prospect, he doesn’t think twice about traveling to meet with them locally. His definition of local is a 2-3 hour drive one way. He has even made several 5-6 hour drives to meet with prospects that later turned into sales.
- He makes every attempt to speak with his prospects by phone or in person before sending emails or mailings.
- He stays in good contact with past customers to generate referrals for future sales.
- He never stops following up with leads – both old and new.
- All throughout this sales year he had stated the following: “I am working my business harder this year and I firmly believe that the more you put into it, the more you can expect to get out of it.”
We are sure that Diana would admire these efforts and be proud of this year’s recipient. We pleased to give the 2008 Diana M. Reedy Quality of Effort Award to Greg Massmann. Congratulations, and thank you for your efforts!
